Introduction to Hetero South Africa

Introduction to Hetero South Africa

Hetero’s business venture in South Africa began in 2008 with the filing of multiple dossiers with SAHPRA (South African Health Products Regulatory Authority), leading to the official commercialization of these products in 2016 with the establishment of Hetero Drugs South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

Between 2008 and 2016, over 100 high-quality dossiers were filed. These products are manufactured at USFDA, EU, and SAHPRA-approved facilities, ensuring compliance with global pharmaceutical standards.

Hetero launched its operations with a focus on ARV drugs in South Africa, expanded to include oncology medications in 2022, and further broadened its reach with Primary Care and Hospital divisions in 2024.

The South African team operates from Waterfall Corporate Campus in Midrand with a strong staff complement of 45 professionals, including field force and functional departments such as Regulatory Affairs, HR, Finance, and Supply Chain.

Milestones and Achievements:

Hetero South Africa entered the public healthcare sector in 2019 by securing a significant R2 billion ARV tender, marking a major milestone in its journey. In 2022, the company expanded its presence in the public sector by winning a R5 billion supply contract, enabling the distribution of over 1.3 million packs of medicines every month.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hetero played a crucial role by supplying 1 million packs of TLD (Tenofovir, Lamivudine, and Dolutegravir) over a span of five months in collaboration with the National Department of Health (NDoH) to manage ARV shortages. Additionally, Hetero ensured the emergency supply of over 20,000 packs of COVIFOR (Remdesivir) to hospitals across South Africa, providing critical support during the peak of the pandemic.
